Barcelona has maintained its no. 1 ranking in the La Liga points table by playing a draw against the arch rival Real Madrid at Camp Nou on Sunday. There was huge excitement in Spain about this all important encounter. 95,000 people were present in the stadium to watch the match and the supporters would have got their money’s worth. It was a thriller of a match. Both the teams scored two goals each and the match ended in a draw.

Now, Barcelona has 19 points in 7 matches. The Barcelona team had come into this match after winning six La Liga matches on the trot. But, the team didn’t manage to continue its winning streak against Madrid.

On the other hand, Madrid is currently at no. 5 in the points table. Jose Mourinho’s team has played 7 matches in the ongoing La Liga so far and managed to win only three of them. The team lost two and the remaining two finished in the form of a draw.

This was a high pressure game and both the teams started aggressively. Madrid managed to take the lead in the 23d minute of the match when Cristiano Ronaldo capitalized on Karim Benzema’s pass and put the ball into the goal post with a brilliant left footed shot.

Just after 8 minutes, Barcelona scored the equalizer. It was Messi who scored the first goal for Barcelona. That was the last goal to be scored in the first half. At the half time break, the scorecard was saying 1-1 and the match was evenly poised.

Barcelona got a free kick in the 16th minute of the second half and Messi didn’t make any mistake in converting that free kick into a goal. It was a powerful left footed strike by the great Argentinean and the ball flew into the right hand corner of the net.

The scores were levelled again in the 66th minute of the match. Ronaldo took advantage of a well placed pass from Mesut Ozil and dabbed the ball home comfortably.
Neither of the two teams managed to score another goal in the remaining time and the match finished in the form of a draw.

Real Madrid will play its next match against Celta Vigo at Santiago Bernabeu on 20th of October.
